Yaz and Psychological Side Effects

Yaz® is one of the most popular birth control pills prescribed in America. However, not every woman using Yaz using it for birth control purposes. The oral contraceptive is also used to help treat acne and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PDD), a mood disorder linked to a woman’s menstrual cycle.1 In spite of its various uses, the birth control pill also has some troubling side effects and problems—many psychological in nature.

Psychological Problems and Yaz

Yaz contains a synthetic progesterone (drospirenone) and a type of estrogen (estradiol), working by altering hormonal levels in the body. The Yaz birth control pill has been noted to have a number of physiological side effects, including stroke, hypertension, blood clots, and cancer. Yaz also is linked to several psychological problems:2

  • Mood swings
  • Depressed mood
  • Lack of lability (emotional control)
  • Depression
  • Irritability
  • Anger
  • Altered interest in sex

According to the National Institutes of Health, oral contraceptives have been linked to negative emotions and behaviors.3 Clinical studies prove that hormonal contraceptive users are more likely to suffer from depression, anxiety, fatigue, neurotic symptoms, sexual disturbances, compulsion, and anger. The health information agency found that hormonal contraceptives are generally beneficial for mental health, but that long-term use was also associated with alcohol dependence.4

The Yaz Recall

In November 2009, international drug company Bayer, the maker of Yaz, recalled Yaz and the generic form of Yaz, Ocella.5 In the recall, the Food and Drug Administration found that Bayer had miscalculated the hormone levels in the popular birth control pill. As a result, more than 150 thousand boxes of Yaz and Ocella (generic) were recalled. Other than this action in 2009, Yaz has not been subject to other recalls, but has been subject to relabeling.6

For years, patients have used Yaz for more than preventing pregnancy. Regardless of its uses, Yaz causes many serious side effects—both physical and mental. If you or someone you love has suffered depression and other psychological side effects from the Yaz birth control pill, legal remedies are available.
